Shastri’s direct reply puts a stop to the Rahul vs. Gill discussion for the third Test: “Whether he scores or not, on merit he deserves a chance.”

In the lead-up to the third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, the KL Rahul vs. Shubman Gill controversy has been the centre of attention for India. The team management has supported KL Rahul as their top pick thus far, but due to his lengthy dry spell, there have been requests to replace him with the in-form Shubman Gill. On the eve of the third Test, which will be played at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has weighed in on the discussion.

Even before the series began in Nagpur, Gill was the choice of the seasoned cricketers. He earned his first Test century against Bangladesh last December before smashing a superb 208 against New Zealand in an ODI the month before.

Shastri also thinks that the addition of Gill won’t change the team’s lineup or strategy as India looks to win the series against Australia in the third Test after already winning the trophy for the fourth time in a row.
